History of Derby in WV
In 2008, the Chemical Valley Roller Girls (CVRG) became the first roller derby league in West Virginia and originally recruited skaters from the Huntington-Charleston areas of WV. CVRG was created by Liz Vicious (Elizabeth Turner) with the help of Myna Disaster (Laura Collins). Liz Vicious and Myna Disaster became the first co-captains of CVRG. One of their first recruits, Hart (formerly Annie Knuckles), became an integral team member by eventually being the one to aid Liz Vicious with recruitment and coaching for CVRG.
In 2011, the Beckley Area Derby Dames (BADD) was created by Cupcake Cadaver (Stephanie Stover). Yula B. Hurtin' was one of Cupcake's first BADD recruit, and they grew BADD into one of the best roller derby teams in the mid-Atlantic region.
In 2013, the WV All Stars was created and became WV's premier roller derby league that recruited skaters from CVRD, BADD, and the WV Roller Vixens (WRD).
In 2018, WVRD was created to recruit the best derby players in WV. WVRD brought together the MVP players from BADD, CVRG, WRD, and the WV All Stars to serve as WV's highest ranked roller derby league.
